PIDC, on behalf of the Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development, has selected KS Engineers (KSE) to lead the redesign of South Broad Street and the Navy Yard Main Gate, a vital gateway to one of Philadelphia’s economic powerhouses.

The KSE team, based here in Philadelphia, brings together top local talent:

  • Ground Reconsidered – landscape architecture and stakeholder engagement
  • J&M Preservation Studio – structural engineering and historic preservation
  • Michael Baker International – traffic engineering and stakeholder engagement

A New Vision for a Historic Corridor

Broad Street is more than just a road; it’s Philadelphia’s major artery, running from the city’s northern edge all the way to the Delaware River at Pier 1, the Navy Yard’s southernmost point. The South Broad Street entrance serves as the main gateway to the 1,200-acre Navy Yard campus, making it essential for daily access by the Navy Yard’s 150 businesses and 16,000 employees.

As the Navy Yard advances its $6 billion Navy Yard Plan that will double employment, it’s critical that Broad Street be able to efficiently move traffic in and out of the Yard.

Meeting Growth with Smarter Design

Over the past 25 years, the Navy Yard has grown into a thriving hub of innovation, community, and economic activity, now home to 150 companies and 16,000 employees. More people means more vehicles, and the redesign of the South Broad Street entrance is part of PIDC’s efforts to address congestion.

“While we’ve implemented short-term traffic fixes, this project is an important piece of the larger long-term solution we need,” said Kate McNamara, Executive Vice President of the Navy Yard. “Redesigning the Main Gate will improve efficiency and enhance the sense of arrival at this historic and vibrant destination. We’re thrilled to partner with the KSE team, whose experience and enthusiasm perfectly align with PIDC’s mission.”

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue our long-standing partnership with PIDC and contribute meaningfully to the success of this initiative,” said Kamal Shahid, President of KSE.

“We are not only technically capable to successfully deliver this project, but also have genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the continued evolution of the Navy Yard neighborhood,” said Ricky Burrell, Project Manager for KSE.

Construction will begin as early as 2027.

Investing in the Navy Yard’s Future

This project is made possible through funding from PIDC and a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s (DCED) Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF), reinforcing the Commonwealth’s commitment to safe, resilient, and connected communities.
