by Navy Yard Philadelphia
July 13, 2016
Liberty Property Trust and Synterra Partners (Liberty/Synterra) and PIDC today announced that Central Green, the dynamic park located in the center of The Navy Yard, has been honored with three awards, just as Liberty/Synterra’s newest building overlooking the park, 1200 Intrepid Avenue, is scheduled to come online.
Honors for excellence in design and development were received from ArchDaily, Architizer and ULI Philadelphia. Central Green, which opened one year ago, was designed by James Corner Field Operations and developed in a joint investment by Liberty Property/Synterra, PIDC, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
“Central Green is an excellent illustration of how to successfully redefine the intersection of work and play which, in turn, has helped to further advance The Navy Yard as one of the most compelling work environments in the country,” said Brian Cohen, vice president and city manager of Liberty Property Trust. “We are thrilled that the design and development communities have recognized Central Green, a place that remains a key draw for employees working here and companies looking to call The Navy Yard home.”
1200 Intrepid Avenue Nears Completion
It has also been one year since Liberty Property/Synterra broke ground on the now nearly complete 94,000 square foot office building at 1200 Intrepid Avenue. It is the first building in Philadelphia to be designed by the world-renowned Bjarke Ingels Group.
The building sits at the western edge of Central Green. The structure seems to defy gravity, as its façade is curved and bows inward at the ground plane, thoughtfully designed to communicate with Central Green in a gesture reminiscent of the park’s circular running track, activity pods, and planting vignettes.
This summer, Penn Capital Management will occupy 26,000 square feet in the building, with the remaining 68,000 square feet of office space available for lease.
Diverse Recognitions
Central Green, located in the heart of The Navy Yard, utilizes a 20-foot wide “Social Track” to organize the project and frame a unique, immersive interior park. Marked by a large digital clock and oversized chaise lounge chairs, this 1/5 mile loop allows for measured exercise and socialization. The park interior is home to a hammock grove, a sunlawn that hosts concerts and other performances, conference table with Wi-Fi, bocce courts, table tennis, and a fitness area.
Recent recognitions have come from:
– ArchDaily, whichincluded Central Green in its “100 Top Projects” list. This list in the “American Architecture Projects” category highlights “the 100 most visited works of architecture in the US, turning them into case studies and references for millions of architects, students and journalists that seek the most important, inspiring works of American architecture”.
– Architizer, which conducted its fourth annual A+ Awards. These were grouped into 113 categories and voted on both by a select panel and more than 400,000 members of the public. Central Green was recognized as the Popular Choice Winner: Landscaping & Public Planning – Public Park.
– Urban Land Institute Philadelphia’s third annual Awards for Excellence (honoring the legacy of Willard G. “Bill” Rouse III) recognizes top projects completed within the last five years throughout Eastern and Central Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Delaware. Central Green received one of the sought-after 2016 ULI Philadelphia Awards for Excellence by demonstrating quality planning and design, incorporating elements that build healthy places, promoting environmental sustainability, and meeting community needs.
“We are thrilled with the recognition of this world-class park to The Navy Yard’s growing campus,” said Prema Gupta, senior vice president of Navy Yard Planning & Development at PIDC. “The Navy Yard is one of the nation’s most vibrant and progressive business locations, and Central Green is the perfect sustainable amenity to match the active workplace activities that surround it.”
