League Island Park is a $2 million, 2.5-acre park designed by Philadelphia firms Sikora Wells Appel and KS Engineers. It is bounded by 11th and 12th Street to the east and west, Constitution Avenue to the north, and the under construction 25,000-square-foot Penn State building (Center for Building Energy Education and Innovation) to the south. League Island Park’s name and design comes from the history of The Navy Yard, where the original land was an island on the Delaware River. The water channel between South Philadelphia and League Island was filled in, creating today’s 1,200-acre Navy Yard. League Island Park is the fifth park at The Navy Yard, joining other open spaces like the Marine Parade Grounds, Crescent Park, Dry Dock Park, and the Riverfront Greenway.

For the grand opening, the weekly Lunch Truck Lineup relocated from the Marine Parade Grounds to League Island Park for the afternoon. Visitors enjoyed their food truck lunch in the new park, while hearing brief remarks from PIDC, and designers Sikora Wells Appel and KS Engineers. We thank everyone who came out to see the new park and we hope you’ll visit often. For more photos from the event, view the album on Facebook.
