The Navy Yard Running Club (NYRC) is a diverse group of people who meet once a week for a run around the Navy Yard. The running club welcomes runners of all levels, and is made up of a mix of Navy Yard employees, neighbors from South Philly, and beyond! NYRC is full of participants like Ben Pierson, who loves to share his passion of running with others.

MEET BEN

The Navy Yard: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Ben Pierson: My name is Ben Pierson. I am a Mechanical Engineer, and originally from a small town in South Jersey called Sewell. I ended up in Philadelphia after getting a college internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in 2009. I’ve been here at the Navy Yard ever since.

TNY: How did you find out about the Navy Yard Running Club? Why do you run?

BP: The Navy Yard Facebook Page! Running is my activity that’s physically exhausting but mentally and emotionally recharging.  Each run gives me a new challenge and opportunity to push myself.  It is even a great way to meet people filled with positive energy. That’s why I love NYRC!

TNY: What are some of your favorite running spots? (Besides the Navy Yard!)

BP: Running the Ben Franklin Bridge during the sunrise!  The views of the Philadelphia never get old from the bridge.

TNY: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

BP: Let’s run sometime! You can always find me on Tuesday at 12th & Constitution for the NYRC!
