The Navy Yard is adding to its collection of awards with its recent recognition as a “Great Place in Pennsylvania” by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-PA)! The Navy Yard was honored in the “Great Transformations” category for its successful planning efforts that build healthy and vibrant communities throughout the Commonwealth and promote the Chapter’s mission and vision.
Pattie Guttenplan, Treasurer of the APA-PA, presented the award to Jodie Harris, President of PIDC, at the second annual Navy Yard Night Market on September 12, 2024.
PIDC acquired the Navy Yard in 2000 on behalf of the City of Philadelphia after years of disuse with the goal of redeveloping it into a place to work, play, and live. Since then, the Navy Yard is now an expanding community of 15,000 employees and 150 employers who inhabit 8-million square feet of facilities across a mix of property types, including office, retail, industrial, R&D, and institutional.
To support this growing community, development at the Navy Yard has included a strategic continuous expansion of park acreage, the creation of miles of new streets and sidewalks, and the introduction of Indego bike shares to enhance community mobility and engagement.
The Navy Yard also hosts over 100 events and community initiatives, promoting a high-spirited and connected neighborhood while ensuring that business growth aligns with the interests and well-being of people who work at and visit the Navy Yard.
As we look to the future, we remain committed in our mission to blend successful business development with a deep respect for community needs, ensuring that the Navy Yard remains a “Great Place” for years to come.
