There’s more than one way to get around the Navy Yard. From commuting to work and connecting with neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia to taking a leisurely ride along the waterfront, two wheels offer a different way to explore campus.
Bikes, scooters, and bike share are all part of the mix, whether you’re a regular cyclist, trying a new commute, or bringing the family down for an afternoon ride. With dedicated bike lanes, scenic routes, and multiple Indego stations throughout campus, there are plenty of ways to get moving.
Getting Here & Getting Around
Biking is a convenient way to reach and travel throughout the Navy Yard. Dedicated bike lanes and the South Broad Street sidepath connect cyclists to campus, while multiple Indego bike-share stations make it easy to incorporate a bike into a trip to or from the Navy Yard.
Bike Share
Three Indego stations are located within the Navy Yard at Crescent Park, Central Green, and 15th Street & Kittyhawk Avenue, with additional stations available near NRG Station and throughout South Philadelphia.
Indego can be especially useful for connecting the Navy Yard to the rest of the city. Riders can pick up an Indego bike elsewhere in Philadelphia and return it to a station on campus, or grab a bike at the Navy Yard at the end of the workday and ride toward home, returning it to a station closer to home.
New to Indego? The Indego app makes it easy to find nearby stations, purchase a pass, unlock a bike, and start your ride.
Ride Together
For some, biking is a part of the daily commute. For others, it’s a way to get outside, spend time with your family, or simply see the Navy Yard from a different perspective.
Every other Wednesday, the Philly Bike Train brings that community spirit to the morning commute. The free, community-led group ride connects cyclists throughout Philadelphia, with the Navy Yard route departing from 15th Street & Mifflin Street, outside of Ultimo Coffee Shop, at 8:10 a.m.
The Navy Yard is also a popular destination for recreational riders. Families bring their children to practice riding and learn how to navigate on two wheels, while experienced cyclists use campus roads and waterfront routes as part of their regular training.
Make the Most of Your Ride
Whether you’re commuting or just out for a ride, a little planning can make the experience even better:
- Plan your route: Look for dedicated bike lanes and map out your connections before you head out.
- Give yourself time: If you’re trying a new commute, leave a little extra time to get familiar with your route.
- Explore the waterfront: Take advantage of scenic routes and views along the Delaware River.
- Ride with the family: The Navy Yard’s open spaces offer opportunities for kids to practice and build confidence on two wheels.
- Share the road: Keep an eye out for pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists, and scooters as you travel throughout campus.
Whether you’re heading to work, training for your next race, riding with your kids, or simply looking for a new way to explore, grab your bike, find a scooter, or unlock an Indego and see the Navy Yard on two wheels. And if you’re not quite ready to pedal, scooters are another popular way to get around and take in the sights.
