Camp Out for Hunger: How the Navy Yard Is Giving Back

September 23, 2026

For nearly three decades, Philabundance’s Camp Out for Hunger has brought the Philadelphia region together around a simple but powerful goal: helping ensure that our neighbors have access to the food they need.

Each year, the annual food drive collects non-perishable food donations across the region to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. What began as a local radio station’s effort has grown into the largest single-site food drive in the country, bringing together businesses, schools, community organizations, and individuals to make a meaningful impact.

The Navy Yard Community Gives Back

The Navy Yard has proudly participated in Camp Out for Hunger since 2019, making it an annual opportunity for the campus community to come together and give back. This donation drive provides an opportunity for the Navy Yard to come together to support our Philadelphia community and surrounding region.

This year, we start our Camp Out for Hunger collection drive on Wednesday, October 14, through November 18. Donations can be made at ten collection sites throughout the Navy Yard, making it easy for employees, residents, and visitors across campus to participate. Whether you donate a single item or bring a few, every contribution helps provide nutritious food to individuals and families who need it.

What Can You Donate?

As you begin to think about what to donate, consider focusing on items that are shelf-stable and easy to prepare. Some of the most-needed items include:

  • Creamy peanut butter (plastic containers only)
  • Canned or shelf-stable meats, including tuna
  • Shelf-stable white milk
  • Canned beef stew
  • Canned chili
  • Breakfast cereal or hot cereal

  • Nuts and trail mix
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Brown Rice
  • Jelly (plastic containers only)
  • Canned fruits and vegetables, preferably low-sodium and without high fructose corn syrup

Please remember that only food items that do not require refrigeration and are packaged in boxes, cans, plastic containers or non-breakable jars can be collected.

Bring a Can, Get a Chance to Win

There will be another opportunity to support Camp Out for Hunger during the Navy Yard 5K packet pickup on October 13, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

As part of the event’s Camp Out for Hunger kickoff, participants and members of the Navy Yard community who bring a canned food donation can be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a complimentary overnight stay at Courtyard Philadelphia South at The Navy Yard.

It’s a simple way to make your donation go a little further, and you might even walk away with a reward of your own.

Every Donation Makes a Difference

Food insecurity can affect individuals and families in every community, and food donations can help banks and pantries provide reliable access to nutritious meals.

The Navy Yard’s participation in Camp Out for Hunger is one of the many ways our campus community comes together to support Philadelphia. By adding a few items to your grocery cart and bringing them to the Navy Yard, organizing friendly competition among your coworkers, or simply making a monetary donation here, you can help make a difference.

Join the Navy Yard community in supporting Camp Out for Hunger and help us make this year’s food drive our most impactful one yet.

Together, we can help fill the shelves and make sure more of our Philadelphia community has access to the food they need.
