Fall brings a different look to the Navy Yard. As the leaves begin to turn, the campus’s more than 2,000 trees add color to its streets, parks, and open spaces, creating plenty of reasons to get outside and see the season for yourself.
A Campus Rooted in Green
The Navy Yard has more than 20 acres of parks and green space and has been a Level 1 arboretum since 2018. Its collection includes mature trees as well as younger plantings, with species ranging from silver maple to red oaks, sweetgums, and sycamores.
One of the best ways to experience it is simply to take a walk. Start at Central Green, where the circular track makes it easy to explore the park while enjoying the changing landscape. Along the way, you’ll find the hammock grove, bocce courts, table tennis, lounge chairs, and other spaces designed for spending time outside.
Room to Slow Down
For a more open-air fall afternoon, head to League Island Park or the Marine Parade Grounds. League Island Park offers a quieter setting for relaxing or taking a break, while the eight-acre Marine Parade Grounds provides plenty of open space and a look at one of the Navy Yard’s most historic landscapes. Both are good spots to bring a picnic, meet up with friends, or let the kids have some room to run.
If you’d rather keep moving, follow the Riverfront Greenway along Admiral Peary Way. The one-mile path offers views of the Delaware River and connects some of the Navy Yard’s parks and open spaces, making it an easy way to take in more of the campus on foot or by bike.
More Ways to Enjoy Fall
And there’s another reason to make a fall visit. On Saturday, October 24, the Navy Yard will celebrate Halloween with a family-friendly Trunk-Or-Treat Movie Night. Come in costume, enjoy seasonal activities, and spend some time outside with the Navy Yard community.
Whether you’re looking for a place to take a walk, enjoy lunch outdoors, or spend a fall afternoon with family and friends, the Navy Yard offers plenty of ways to enjoy the season. As the leaves change, come see a side of the campus that looks a little different every week.
