The year 2013 was a very momentous year for The Navy Yard! We’re taking a look back on some major events and milestones of the year:
– The Navy Yard welcomed 22 new companies in 2013, making it the highest single year’s growth since the conversion from a closed naval base to a mixed-use business campus. [read more]
– The Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (EEB Hub) broke ground on two buildings at The Navy Yard: a full-spectrum retrofit on Building 661, a 38,000-square-foot former rec center that will become the Hub’s future headquarters; the second building is a 25,000-square-foot new construction project named the Penn State Center for Building Energy Education and Innovation. Both projects are slated to be complete in 2014 with an investment of over $25 million. [read more]
– Vincera Institute expanded into newly renovated Building 489, to become a multi-service wellness facility. Led by Dr. William C. Meyers, Vincera was previously located in Quarters M-1 since 2010, focusing on core injuries. Vincera Institute now includes the physicians’ clinic, surgical center, rehab and performance center, yoga studio, imaging, acupuncture, nutrition, and a cafe, all under one roof, offering The Navy Yard tenants new amenities and options! – The Navy Yard unveiled an updated Real Estate Master Plan, outlining an additional 7.5 million square feet of future development, for a total of 13.5 million square feet of total development.
– The Navy Yard hosted over 95 events in 2013, bringing more than 80,000 visitors to the campus! Some event highlights include: 7th annual Executives Breakfast, 2nd annual Earth Day Bike Tour, Greenbuild, Philly Tech Week, PAWS Mutt Strut, Broad Street Run, Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk, Feel the Love 5K, Leprechaun Run, three beer/cider festivals, Great Chefs Event, PHS Fall Garden Festival, PHeaSt, PSSC’s sports leagues, and many more!
– Internationally renowned chef Marc Vetri announced a new, full-service restaurant and bar at Building 500, located at the Broad Street gate. Named Lo Spiedo, the restaurant is based on a neighborhood Italian trattoria concept; the plan includes approximately 150 seats inside, as well as a large outdoor dining patio. [read more]
– GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) relocated its North American headquarters to The Navy Yard into Five Crescent Drive, a $150 million, 208,000-square-foot, double LEED Platinum building, developed by Liberty Property Trust/Synterra Partners. GSK’s new office environment features and open layout that fosters idea sharing and collaboration.
– The Navy Yard continues to grow on social media. Employees, tenants, and friends can check Facebook at /TheNavyYard, Twitter @NavyYardPhila, and Instagram @NavyYardPhila for real-time shuttle updates, news, events, contests, and photos and more!
– The Navy Yard Shuttles had a very successful first full year in operation, with ridership continuing to grow throughout the year. The shuttles provided approximately 245,000 trips on the Loop and Express shuttles, better connecting employees and visitors to public transportation stops.
– Construction is complete on The Navy Yard’s fifth park, League Island Park, a $2 million, 2.5-acre park bounded by 11th & 12th Streets, Constitution and Kitty Hawk Avenues. Designed by Philadelphia firms Wells Appel and KS Engineers, this park includes an innovative stormwater collection feature.
– Franklin Square Capital Partners announced and broke ground on its new headquarters at The Navy Yard, an 80,050-square-foot, Class A office building located at 201 Rouse Blvd. 201 Rouse Blvd is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification when complete, and represents over $26 million of investment. – The Navy Yard expanded its Lunch Truck Lineup program; over 35 unique food trucks served breakfast and lunch at Crescent Park, 15th & Kitty Hawk Ave, and the Marine Parade Grounds. More than 15,000 lunches were served! [read more]
– URBN completed renovations on Building 3 (the former cruise terminal), now home to special events venue for URBN, and began renovations on Building 18. Building 18 is a 92,000-square-foot former boiler and blacksmith shop and will be the new home office for the Anthropologie brand. The total investment for both building renovations is over $48 million.
– The GridSTAR Center, a demonstration project for smart grid, net zero energy buildings was completed. This project, spearheaded by Penn State University and funded by the Department of Energy, creates a live, interactive demonstration of electrical systems technologies, serves as a hub for hands-on education and training, and provides a rich infrastructure for data and research. – The Navy Yard Energy Master Plan was completed. This plan outlines the future of The Navy Yard with an over $90 million electric grid infrastructure investment, and a business plan that proposes a strategic implementation plan for deployment of significant smart grid technologies.
