Chapel Plaza came alive on Thursday, May 21, as community members, residents, employees, and visitors gathered for the launch of Third Thursdays, a new event series designed to bring people together through food, music, and local experiences.

Despite the rain, the inaugural event, held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., transformed the open retail space at the Navy Yard’s luxury apartments, AVE Normandy, into a vibrant gathering place featuring local merchant vendors, live music that could be heard throughout the Plaza, lawn games, and a variety of food offerings from some of the community’s favorite food trucks.

Created to showcase this new section of the Navy Yard, Third Thursdays invites attendees to explore Chapel Plaza, connect with neighbors and colleagues, and support local businesses in a welcoming, family-friendly environment.

Guests enjoyed live music from onyx&honey. while participating in games like cornhole and giant Jenga. Approximately 12 vendors participated in the event, from permanent jewelry and bag charms to homemade jams, giving attendees an opportunity to shop local and engage with small businesses from across the community.

The event also featured a strong lineup of food vendors, including Moocheeze Food Truck, Thai It Up, Humpty’s Dumplings, and the Navy Yard’s very own Gatehouse with the drinks.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came when the rain suddenly poured down, and attendees, vendors, and staff quickly came together to move tables and chairs indoors. The open retail space soon transformed into a cozy atmosphere where guests continued to eat, drink, shop, and connect despite the weather.

“If all these people showed up in the rain for Third Thursdays, I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s bright and sunny,” said Lisa Fazio of Philly Phashion. “We were all prepared for a slow night, but the Navy Yard showed up!” All the vendors were surprised by how many people came out despite the weather. We’re already looking forward to next month, when we’ll all come together for Third Thursdays before heading to Navy Yard Night at Citizens Bank Park on June 18th.

Third Thursdays will continue monthly through October, creating ongoing opportunities for the community to gather, discover local businesses, and experience the energy of Chapel Plaza throughout the season.

The successful kickoff event reflected the growing excitement surrounding Chapel Plaza and reinforced the importance of creating spaces where people can connect, unwind, and celebrate community together.
