Despite humidity, nearly 800 community members spent Sunday, June 28, making memories at this year’s Family Fest at the Navy Yard. With interactive sports, live music, family activities, giveaways, and a surprise visit from one of Philadelphia’s favorite Philebrity, the afternoon was packed with fun from start to finish.

Families arrived throughout the day ready to play, explore, and enjoy everything the event had to offer. Kids bounced from activity to activity while parents relaxed with live music from Onyx & Honey, creating a lively atmosphere that carried through the entire afternoon. Guests also enjoyed bites from Beck’s Cajun Cruiser, Gigi’s & Big R, Tokio Sushi Truck, Humpty’s Dumplings, Babalouie BBQ, Hardy’s Funnel Cake, Poundcake Heaven, while Snowie Philly kept everyone cool (and satisfied) with sweet summer treats. The excitement even caught the attention of local media, with stations like FOX 29 stopping by to cover the festivities.

One of the day’s most popular attractions was the Discovery Pickleball Experience, where instructors from Ballers Philadelphia introduced visitors of all ages to one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Beginners learned the basics while more experienced players picked up new tips and enjoyed friendly rallies throughout the afternoon. USA Pickleball also joined the event, sharing information about the sport and handing out giveaways like rackets to participants eager to continue playing.

“It was so much fun being out and connecting with the community in the Navy Yard at Family Fest,” says Braden Keith, Ballers Philadelphia. “The energy of the whole event was unreal. Central Green truly felt alive and pulsing. It was the best of what this city can be, and a good reminder of the connections that drew us all to pickleball in the first place.”

Nearby, guests put their skills to the test at a four-hoop mobile basketball arcade from Rollin’ Hoops, challenged friends at inflatable soccer games, and enjoyed giant Jenga, pong, and other activities throughout the park that kept the entire family moving throughout the afternoon.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The Phillie Phanatic made a grand entrance, riding into the park on the back of a pickup truck while waving enthusiastically to cheering “phans.” The crowd immediately erupted as he made his way through the event, stopping to give hugs, high-fives, and pose for countless photos with children and adults alike.

But he didn’t stop there.

The Phanatic showed off his basketball skills, picked up a pickleball paddle to join in the fun, and even attempted to become the newest member of Onyx & Honey during their live performance. Everywhere he went, laughter followed, creating unforgettable moments that had families smiling all afternoon.

Another crowd favorite was Bodacious Caricatures whose chair remained full from the moment the event began until the final guests headed home at 5 p.m. Families left with personalized keepsakes while others grabbed Navy Yard frisbees, sunglasses, and stickers to remember a day filled with fun.

Family Fest once again demonstrated what makes the Navy Yard such a special place to gather—a welcoming community where families can spend time together, discover something new, and simply enjoy a summer afternoon.

We’d like to thank everyone who joined us, along with our partners, vendors, performers, and volunteers who helped make the day such a success. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for more community events throughout the year.
