New extended route restores direct SEPTA bus service between Center City and the Navy Yard seven days a week for the first time in more than a decade
PHILADELPHIA (August 11, 2026) — PIDC, Philadelphia’s public-private economic development corporation and master developer and operator of the Navy Yard, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), elected officials, and community partners today celebrated the official launch of SEPTA Route 45 service to the Navy Yard, marking the return of direct SEPTA bus service between Center City and the Navy Yard seven days a week for the first time in more than a decade.
The milestone was commemorated with a ceremonial first bus arrival into the Navy Yard, where employees, partners, and guests gathered to welcome the new service before remarks from Kate McNamara, Executive Vice President of the Navy Yard at PIDC, and Scott Sauer, General Manager of SEPTA. The celebration concluded with a community reception at AVE Normandy, the first luxury residential community in the Navy Yard.
“The Navy Yard is one of Philadelphia’s strongest economic engines, supporting 16,000 jobs today with billions in new investment on the way,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “Economic opportunity starts with something simple: a reliable, lower-cost ride to work. The new Route 45 routing adds daily SEPTA service to the Navy Yard, making it easier for more Philadelphians to access good jobs and family-sustaining careers without the cost of driving. That is economic mobility in action.”
“The Navy Yard continues to be a major driver of Philadelphia’s economic growth, creating jobs and attracting investment from across the region,” said Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. “Expanding access to the Navy Yard through reliable public transportation helps ensure that more Philadelphians can connect to these opportunities. Route 45 is a meaningful investment in mobility, workforce access, and the continued growth of this important Philadelphia destination.”
Beginning August 23, 2026, Route 45 will provide seven-day-a-week service between Center City and the Navy Yard, serving nine stops throughout the campus and connecting riders to major employers, residential communities, healthcare facilities, parks, and neighborhood destinations. The new route complements PIDC’s existing Navy Yard Transit services, which will continue to provide connections to Center City Express and NRG Station, as well as transportation throughout the Navy Yard. In addition to providing direct service from Center City, Route 45 connects with the Broad Street Line at NRG Station, making it easier for riders from across Philadelphia to access the Navy Yard.
“The Navy Yard is growing rapidly, and we’re committed to expanding transportation options that support the campus’s continued evolution,” said Kate McNamara, Executive Vice President of the Navy Yard at PIDC. “The launch of Route 45 is another important investment in making the Navy Yard easier to access for the thousands of people who work, live, receive medical care, and visit here every day. The Route 45 extension represents another step in the Navy Yard’s continued evolution as one of Philadelphia’s fastest-growing mixed-use neighborhoods. By expanding transportation choices, the service strengthens connections between the Navy Yard and the broader Philadelphia region while supporting continued growth across the campus.
